When to Dip In and Out of Skincare Products: A Guide to Knowing What to Use Daily

In the world of skincare, the choices can be overwhelming. With new products launching all the time, it’s easy to want to try everything, but how do you know when it’s okay to mix and match, and when you should stick with something until the bottle’s empty? If you’ve been tweaking your routine, or even tossing out those old face wipes in favor of giving your skin the TLC it deserves, you may have noticed gaps in your routine. But don't worry, we're here to help!

Let’s break down how to master the art of dipping in and out of products while building an effective, balanced skincare routine.

Cleansers: Mix and Match

Your cleanser is one product you can be flexible with. Depending on your skin type, what you’ve worn that day (full makeup or minimal), or how your skin feels, it’s okay to alternate between different cleansers.

- Heavy makeup day? Use a rich oil cleanser to break everything down.
- Feeling minimal? A gentle, water-based cleanser will do the trick.
- Post-workout? Go for something refreshing and light.

The key here is to cater to your skin’s immediate needs.

 Eye Products: Stick to One

While variety can be great in some areas of your routine, your eyes are a little more sensitive. Eye creams and gels should be used consistently until the product is finished. If your eyes don’t respond well to a product, maybe they feel irritated or dry, it’s not something to push through. Trust your skin’s reaction, and if it’s not working, pass it on.

- Tip: If you have multiple products, try one at a time until you find the one that works best for you!

Toners: A Little Variety is Fine

Toners offer a bit more flexibility than other products. It’s completely fine to switch between a few different toners during the week based on your skin’s current condition.

- Feeling oily? Reach for a balancing toner with ingredients like witch hazel.
- Need extra hydration? A hydrating mist like our Moroccan Orange Blossom Water or rose water.

Rotate them based on how your skin feels that day, and you’ll keep it balanced.

Face Oils: Use Until Finished

This is where commitment is key. Face oils, especially those containing powerhouse ingredients like Vitamin C or E, should be used consistently until the bottle is finished. These ingredients need time to work their magic, so if you’re switching too soon, you may not be seeing their full benefits.

- Tip: If your skin loves your face oil, you’ll see it in the glow and smoothness over time. When you finish the bottle, reassess whether it’s time to stick with it or change it up.

For example, my go-to is the Rosehip & Vitamin E Face Oil. It’s nourishing, hydrating, and perfect for combating dry skin, especially in cooler months.

 Moisturisers: Finish Before Moving On

Moisturisers are another product that don’t need a huge rotation. I tend to finish the one I’m using before moving on to another. While having a moisturiser for drier days or travel can be helpful, you don’t need a shelf full of them.

- Tip: Stick with one that fits your skin’s needs and finish it before experimenting with another. That way, you’ll give the product time to show its full benefits.

SPF: Daily and Always Fresh

The best SPF is the one you’ll actually use, so pick one you love and make it a daily habit. Just remember: don’t keep SPF from one year to the next. These products degrade over time and won’t protect your skin as effectively.

- Tip: Find a toxic-free SPF, apply it every day, and enjoy the peace of mind that your skin is protected!

Skincare can feel overwhelming with so many products to choose from. But once you understand what products to finish and which you can mix and match, it becomes much easier. The key is to listen to your skin, be consistent with certain essentials (like face oils and SPF), and have fun experimenting where it makes sense, like with cleansers and toners.
