When I think about where my love for natural skincare began, it always leads me back to my mum. She wasn’t just my first teacher in life, she was my first teacher in self-care. Her lessons weren’t taught through words alone, they were lived, practiced, and lovingly shared every single day.
My mum would take simple, pure ingredients and turn them into remedies for just about everything. Whether it was soothing dry skin with argan oil or using rosewater to calm irritated skin, she always had a solution. It was second nature to her, but as a teenager, I didn’t fully understand or appreciate what was in front of me.
Like many girls my age, I was drawn to the glossy bottles and big promises of store bought skincare. I’d ignore her advice and roll my eyes at her suggestions. That was until my final year of secondary school, when I started battling acne that no store bought product could fix. I felt embarrassed, self-conscious, and desperate for a solution.
One evening, I stood in the kitchen watching her mix a small batch of oil for me. She didn’t lecture or scold me for not listening before. She just handed it to me with a knowing smile, saying, “Try this. Trust it.” I used it out of desperation, but what happened next was nothing short of transformative. In just three days, my skin looked and felt better than it had in months. That moment changed everything for me.
My mum didn’t just give me a remedy, she gave me confidence. She taught me that the best solutions often come from nature, and that simplicity can be powerful. I’ve carried those lessons with me ever since.
When I started Asila, I knew my mom’s influence would be woven into every part of it. The name itself, “Asila,” means “going back to the origin” in Arabic, and it’s a reflection of everything she stood for, returning to what’s pure, simple, and authentic. Every product I create is inspired by the remedies she crafted for our family. When I’m blending oils or designing a new formula, I can hear her voice in my head, guiding me to keep it simple, natural, and meaningful.
Asila isn’t just a skincare brand for me. It’s a letter to my mum and the countless ways she shaped my life. Through Asila, I feel like I’m sharing her wisdom and legacy with the world. Every product is a piece of her story, a reminder of how powerful and nurturing natural ingredients can be.
To this day, whenever I smell rosewater or hold a bottle of argan oil, I’m transported back to those moments with her in the kitchen. Her lessons weren’t just about skincare, they were about believing in yourself, trusting the process, and embracing the beauty in nature and in ourselves.
Mom, this is for you. Thank you for teaching me that the best things in life are simple, natural, and full of love.
