6 Common Summer Skincare Mistakes to Avoid (and What to Do Instead)

When the sun’s out, our skin’s needs shift  but many of us don’t realise that some everyday habits might be doing more harm than good. At Asila, we’re all about gentle, effective skincare rooted in nature and tradition, so we’ve rounded up the most common summer skincare mistakes (plus what you should be doing instead). Your skin deserves to thrive, not just survive, this summer.

☀️ 1. Skipping SPF Indoors

Think you’re safe from UV damage just because you’re working from home or driving in the car? Not quite. UVA rays can penetrate windows and contribute to pigmentation and premature aging. SPF isn’t just for the beach, it’s your daily skin shield.

Fix it: Apply a broad-spectrum SPF every morning, no matter where you are.

🧼 2. Over-Cleansing the Skin

It’s tempting to wash your face multiple times a day when the heat and humidity kick in. But over-cleansing can strip your skin’s natural oils and damage your protective barrier, leading to sensitivity and breakouts.

Fix it: Stick to cleansing twice a day with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser.

💧 3. Ditching Moisturiser Because of Oily Skin

Many people skip moisturiser in the summer thinking it’ll make their skin oilier. But dehydration can actually trigger your skin to produce more oil to compensate.

Fix it: Use a lightweight face oil like our Argan, Prickly Pear & 24K Gold Face Oil to hydrate without clogging pores. It balances oil production and gives your skin a beautiful, natural glow.

🕶️ 4. Forgetting to Reapply SPF

One application of sunscreen in the morning isn’t enough especially if you’re outdoors, sweating, or wearing makeup.

Fix it: Reapply SPF every 2–3 hours. Keep a mini bottle in your bag to make reapplication easy throughout the day.

🍑 5. Over-Exfoliating Sun-Exposed Skin

Exfoliating too often (especially with scrubs or strong acids) can cause irritation, particularly if your skin is already sun-stressed.

Fix it: Limit exfoliation to once a week in summer, and opt for gentle methods like a soft muslin cloth or a natural clay mask.

🛏️ 6. Using Heavy Products at Night

Rich creams and thick layers of product can feel suffocating in warmer weather, especially when your skin needs to breathe and regulate oil overnight.

Fix it: Switch to lightweight oils or serums that hydrate and repair without overwhelming your skin. Our French Lavender & Avocado Face Oil is a lovely nighttime companion in summer.
